چکیده

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy STS experiments were performed on the 001 and 111 surfaces of single crystalline magnetite. Room temperature spectra exhibit a 0.2 eV gap around Ef. The importance of perfect surface order to the existence of this gap is illustrated. STS is also carried out on the 111 surface, at 140 and 95 K, just above and below the Verwey transition temperature TV 120 K , respectively. It is confirmed that above TV a 0.2 eV gap exists in the surface density of states DOS around Ef. Furthermore, broad bands are resolved on both sides of Ef, with peaks centered on +0.5 eV and −0.45 eV. Below TV it is shown that the value of the gap in the surface DOS remains similar, however, the peaks resolved in the conduction and valence bands shift markedly away from Ef. The similarity of the gap value before and after the transition points away from an ionic charge ordering occurring at the magnetite surface below TV. However, the shifting of the bands points to a certain degree of electronic ordering or charge disproportionation playing an integral part in the Verwey transition, at the magnetite surface.

Morphology and local electronic structure of metal particles on metal oxide surfaces: a scanning tunneling microscopic and scanning tunneling spectroscopic study

Metal particles (Au, Pd and Ni) with an average diameter between 7 to 100 ,~ have been prepared on thin metal oxide films (TiO 2, MgO and A1203), epitaxially grown on refractory metal substrates {Mo(100) or Re(0001)}, and imaged using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Information regarding the local electronic structure has been obtained using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Controlle...

Variations of the local electronic surface properties of TiO2„110... induced by intrinsic and extrinsic defects

Variation of the local electronic structure at rutile TiO2(110) surfaces was studied by scanning tunneling spectroscopy ~STS!. Structural surface features such as step edges, (132) reconstructed strands, and their terminations were correlated to changes in tunneling spectra. In particular, band-gap states, associated with a reduced surface, showed characteristic variations. In addition, electro...

Oxygen Vacancies on SrO-terminated SrTiO3(100) Surfaces studied by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

The electronic structure of SrTiO 3 (001) surfaces was studied using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and density-functional theory. With high dynamic range measurements, an in-gap transition level was observed on SrO-terminated surfaces, at 2.7 eV above the valence band maximum. The density of centers responsible for this level was found to increase with surface segregation of oxygen vacancies ...

Surface and Bulk Electronic Structure of ScN(001) Investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy and Optical Absorption Spectroscopy

ScN(001) 1×1 surfaces have been prepared by growing ScN on MgO(001) using radio frequency molecular beam epitaxy. In-situ ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling spectroscopy indicates that the Fermi level at the surface lies slightly above the Sc 3d conduction band edge, which is attributed to a downward band bending at the surface. In-situ scanning tunneling microscopy is used to image the Sc an...
